The Turtle Hat is a hat item which was first added as the Nyan Hat on March 7, 2013.

Function

When equipped, the Turtle Hat serves a purely cosmetic purpose. The item leaves a trail of bubbles behind the player when they move around.

History

The Turtle Hat has undergone multiple alterations before reaching its current state. This was done to avoid copyright issues, as alluded by the item description.

The first version of the item was the File:Nyan Hat Icon.png Nyan Hat, released alongside the Phonecats Hat on March 7, 2013. Both items were based on the Nyan Cat internet meme. When worn by a player, the hat would create a rainbow trail behind the player, much like the eponymous cat.

In May 2013, Christopher Torres, the copyright owner of Nyan Cat, sued Warner Bros. for an unauthorized usage of the character. In light of this, the developers decided to alter the Nyan Hat's design in order to avoid any copyright issue themselves.

Per fan suggestion, the File:Taco Dog Icon.png Taco Dog was introduced on May 11, 2013 as the Nyan Hat's replacement. The hat featured a dog in a taco that leaves behind a trail with the same color pattern as the flag of Mexico.

While the Taco Dog seemed like a good idea at that time, it was soon discovered that the Taco Dog was another creation of Torres. A poll was soon posted, asking the playerbase for ideas for the second redesign.

The possible choices for the redesign at that time were Yerfdog, Piggy Bank, Turtle, Kitty, and Puppy. The poll closed on May 13, with Turtle winning 45.12% of the votes. The Turtle Hat was then rolled out on May 16. A teaser was first posted on the RTsoft forums hours before its release.
