The added & removed Features to Growtopia

Discontinued Platforms

Growtopia used to be available for the following consoles: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch. A WebOS build of the game was planned during its early stages, but it was never published, because WebOS was deemed 'a dying platform'.[1][2]

Removed Daily Challenges

The following Daily Challenges have been removed due to large public outcry and abuse. Their special prizes were given new recipes.

  • Bunny Battle: Collect naturally spawned Magic Eggs for points. Removed due to players exploiting the challenge by hoarding them prior to the event and cycling popular worlds filled with Wooden Platform to maximise chance to spawn. +1pts Collect a naturally spawned Magic Egg.
  • Zombie Stomp: Kill players who have been infected with the g-Virus during the Pandemic for points. Removed due to players simply exploiting the Broadcasting system to bring infected players into their world. +1pts Per zombie killed.

Ubisoft Club Rewards

Main article: Ubisoft Club Rewards

The Ubisoft Club Rewards system was one of the few features available only to the discontinued console edition of Growtopia. By earning achievements, players could obtain exclusive tokens, which would be able to be traded for unique items.

Four of the exclusive items obtained through this system has been added to the PC/mobile version of Growtopia: Glowing Shirt, Plunger, The Brother Hood, and the Unicorn. One, however, is still yet to be added: the Energy Drink.

Trade System

The Trade System, added in the early days of the game, has not changed much. This is the first design, proposed by Seth. After Hamumu's criticism of the layout being complicated, it was simplified into the version we have today. In addition to the "Cancel" and "Accept" buttons, there were File:Add Old Trade Button.png and File:Lock Button Old Trade.png buttons as well.

Items

The following items existed at one point before Growtopia's release, but were removed.

Left Pointy Sign & Right Pointy Sign

File:Left Pointy Sign Icon.png Left Pointy Sign
Item's method of obtaining is currently unknown.
In-game description is not available.

Left Pointy Sign, as its name might suggest, was a solid sign foreground block. It behaved in a similar manner to the Pointy Sign, but its arrow points to the left, instead of to the right.

The item was completely overwritten by Daisy, along with its data and sprite.

Right Pointy Sign
Item's method of obtaining is currently unknown.
In-game description is not available.

Right Pointy Sign is essentially just the Pointy Sign, but with the "right" prefix to separate it from the Left Pointy Sign.

The item was completely overwritten by Pointy Sign, along with its data.

Lock

File:Lock Icon.png Lock
Item's method of obtaining is currently unknown.
In-game description is not available.

Lock was an early version of the three area locks we know today (Small Lock, Big Lock, Huge Lock). It locks 25 tiles. Its appearance is the same as the Huge Lock's.

The item was completely overwritten by Portcullis, along with its data and sprite.

Below is a piece of text from item_definitions.txt, a file that was included in certain older builds of the game, indicating that Lock once existed in the game:[3]

The item was completely overwritten by Painting: Dink Duck, along with its data and sprite.

Below is a piece of text from item_definitions.txt, indicating that Painting: Dink On Fire once existed in the game:[3]

"NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN NYAN"

The Nyan Hat was a hat item which was added alongside Phonecats Hat on March 7, 2013. Both items were based on the Nyan Cat internet meme.

In May 2013, Christopher Torres, the copyright owner of Nyan Cat, sued Warner Bros. for an unauthorized usage of the character.[4] In light of this, the developers decided to alter the Nyan Hat's design in order to avoid any copyright issue themselves.

File:Taco Dog Icon.png Taco Dog
1 could be obtained from purchasing the item itself for 25,000 gems in the Growtopia Store.
"Taco Dog would never sue anybody, he just likes delicious tacos."

Per fan suggestion, the Taco Dog was introduced on May 11, 2013 as the Nyan Hat's replacement. While the Taco Dog seemed like a good idea at that time, it was soon discovered that the Taco Dog was another creation of Torres.[5] A poll was soon posted, asking the playerbase for ideas for the second redesign.[6]

The possible choices for the redesign at that time were Yerfdog, Piggy Bank, Turtle, Kitty, and Puppy. The poll closed on May 13, with Turtle winning 45.12% of the votes. The Turtle Hat was then rolled out on May 16. A teaser was first posted on the RTsoft forums hours before its release.[7]

A Burglar

Main article: A Burglar

Item's method of obtaining is currently unknown.
In-game description is not available.

A Burglar was a solid SFX foreground block which was added as part of the GROWTECHPHARMA world event on May 16, 2013, a day before the addition of Zombie Defense Pack. When a player punched the block, it played a hurt animation and said, "Ow, Stop!".

The item was completely overwritten by Tombstone, along with its data and sprite. Its sound effect is now played only when an Awkward Friendly Unicorn is punched.

The Boils is an unsplicable face item which was added as part of the Gross-Out update.

"To make this jersey, we had to steal a sports almanac from the distant future and used it to find the winners of this year's World Cup! However, to prevent a paradox, we're keeping it in this time-locked box until the results are official!"

The World Cup Winner's Jersey 2018 is an unsplicable shirt item which was added as part of the Startopia update on July 1, 2018. Before France was announced as the winner of the 2018 World Cup, the developers added this item as a component item under the name of "World Cup Winner Jersey". A sprite of a black-and-white box was used as the item's icon.

The item was overwritten by World Cup Winner's Jersey 2018, along with its data and sprite.

Its old design was similar to the Nyan Hat, both of which were based on the Nyan Cat internet meme. The item's sprite was changed sometime between SummerFest 2013 and Rise of the Desert Dragons (a few months after Nyan Hat was replaced by Turtle Hat) in order to prevent any legal issue.[11][12]

The Emerald Lock is a solid lock foreground block which was added as part of St. Patrick's Week 2015 on March 13, 2015. It gives an effect akin to that of Arroz Con Pollo, giving a 10% chance of adding an extra gem drop when breaking blocks.

On April 2, 2016, hours after the Artsy April update was launched, the texture of the Emerald Lock was changed. 4 dark green dots were added on both the left and right side of the lock, seemingly mimicking a four-leaf clover, to prevent players from painting regular World Locks or Diamond Locks to make them look like an Emerald Lock.

    Old Sponsoring An Item Rules

These are the terms if you want to sponsor the items.

    • You get to suggest an item and be its sponsor. (Could be clothes or an object like a chair or a brick).
    • If the name is deemed inappropriate or conflicts with something we already have planned we'll let you know. We have complete veto power over anything you suggest.
    • It won't have special powers (invisibility) or new functionality that doesn't exist in other items, we get to decide that part.
    • It costs 3,000 World Locks (yes, really! and we're not kidding) which you must have all set aside in a single world that you have world locked.
    • It may take up to 6 weeks for the item to be available in the game, once we agree to create it.
    • It will probably have a recipe, and it will be available to all players in some way (though we decide how they get it!).
    • You do not get a free item - you'll have to earn the item just like everyone else.
    • This is for one item, so something like "Doctor outfit and tools" wouldn't work as it would be like 6 items.
    • It will be announced in the in-game news "New item: _________ (Sponsored by <Your User Name>)" and we'll make sure it stays up there for at least a few days. (We can thank up to three names, but the deal is done with only one person).
    • If an idea is too hard or conflicts with something else we have planned, or for any other reason, we reserve the right to cancel and refund the World Locks.
    • Since everybody sponsors wings all the time, we are no longer accepting sponsorship for any wings or capes.
    • This offer is a temporary experiment and we might stop doing it, or change it at anytime. Of course we'd send back any World Locks if we can't make your item.
    • Using a player's world that is not yours on the application will result in a ban, since you are trying to steal 3000 World Locks from another player. The moderators can find out who you are.
